Umpteen Opportunities for Technologists, Entrepreneurs and Investors

Rapid technological advances in recent decades have been shaping how we communicate, how we work, and how we socialize. They are breaking down geographical and cultural barriers by providing global connectivity through which we share news, ideas, and personal experiences. They have completely transformed our lives.

As we move forward, various kinds of revolutionary technologies are emerging on our horizon. These Horizon Technologies are already seeping into our lives on a smaller scale but are expected to have a huge impact in the coming decades. They are on the cusp of widespread adoption and poised to revolutionize existing paradigms paving the way for unprecedented possibilities. They not only promise to solve longstanding global challenges but also offer transformative opportunities for creating entirely new industries, economies and even societies.

This knowledge paper was prepared specifically for Pan IIT World of Technology (PIWOT) conference held recently at Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai (piwot.paniit.org). In this paper, we explore some of such Horizon Technologies. It offers a peep into the future of both deep foundational technologies and resulting Horizon Technologies when some deep foundational technologies converge for a specific aim. It provides some examples of powerful use cases of these horizon technologies. The purpose is to offer guidance to technologists, entrepreneurs and investors about where impact-creating opportunities are emerging. It outlines major ways in which investments can be made to fuel the development and growth of these technologies. These technologies are also expected to contribute to social development goals in many different ways. Being a research-focused law firm focused on helping shape the future of law, we also identify relevant legal, regulatory and tax issues for which responsive, accommodating and flexible regimes are needed to foster the growth and enablement of these technologies in the paper.
